چکیده

Introduction: Keratoconus is an ectasia that results in corneal thinning in central and paracentral areas of affected corneas. This disease occurs most frequently in young males, underlying a potential role of sex hormones in its pathogenesis. By examining the expression of sex hormone receptors, this study aimed to reveal potential roles of the sex hormone receptors in keratoconus pathogenesis. Methods: Keratoconus and non-keratoconus control corneas were collected from patients volunteered in the West China Hospital. 16 corneas from male patients diagnosed with keratoconus and 9 control corneas from non-keratoconus males were subjected to immunohistochemical staining. The expression of 4 sex hormone receptors, progesterone, androgen and estrogen receptor alpha and estrogen receptor beta was evaluated using their specific antibodies. Results: Compared with the healthy corneas, the progesterone receptor showed significantly lower expression (P=0.01), while androgen receptor expression was significantly higher in keratoconus corneas (p=0.017). No significant difference in estrogen receptor alpha (P=0.978) and estrogen receptor beta (P=0.276) was detected between keratoconus and control corneas. No significant difference in estrogen receptor alpha and estrogen receptor beta was detected between keratoconus and control corneas. Conclusions: The reduction of progesterone receptor expression and increment of androgen receptor expression in keratoconus corneas support that sex hormone receptors are involved in the development

Androgen-dependent hereditary mouse keratoconus: linkage to an MHC region.

PURPOSE To better understand the pathogenesis of hereditary keratoconus, an inbred line of spontaneous mutant mice with keratoconus-affected corneas (SKC mice) was established and studied with a multidisciplinary approach. METHODS Using a mutant mouse with corneas having a keratoconical appearance as the progenitor, an inbred line of SKC mouse was established by repeated sibling mating. Morph...

Altered Receptors

Receptor disorders may produce specific clinical manifestations resembling hypo-or hyper-function of related endocrine gland. Receptor disorders can be divided into five categories: 1)Altered receptor concentration exists in insulin resistance seen in obsity, familial hypercholesterolemia and in testicular feminization. 2) Altered receptor affinity can be seen in fasted obese patients, acromeg...

Keratocan expression is increased in the stroma of keratoconus corneas.

BACKGROUND Keratoconus is a noninflammatory disease characterized by thinning and scarring of the central portion of the cornea. The etiology is unclear. In this study, we sought to identify mRNAs that are differentially expressed in the stroma of keratoconus corneas in comparison to those of corneas from normal individuals and patients with other corneal diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS Total...

I-30: Separate and Combination Effect of SexHormones on TLRs Expression in FallopianTubes

Background: Implantation is characterized by the interaction of two immunologically and genetically distinct tissues. The embryo differs from the cells of the mother, and would be rejected as a parasite by the immune system of the mother if it didn’t secrete immunosuppressive agents. Thus, immunological rejection of the fetus due to recognition of paternal antigens by the maternal immune system...

Role of biochemical factors in the pathogenesis of keratoconus.

Keratoconus (KC) is a corneal disease associated with structural abnormalities in the corneal epithelium, Bowman's layer and stroma and altered concentration of tear components. KC corneas show a different pattern of collagen lamellae than their normal counterparts. Also, a reduction of several collagen types in KC epithelium and stroma was observed. Altered expression and/or activity of lysyl ...
